We spoke with Juliana Macevicius, a 4th-year BHSc student here at Queen's, who shared her journey in healthcare, offering valuable advice for undergraduate students interested in entering the field. Enjoy this quick read!

Q1: How has your experience working in healthcare settings impacted your perspective on the field?

"I would say that working at a pharmacy and various healthcare settings has really opened my eyes to the importance of communication with different individuals. Communication varies, and not everyone will understand the same way when something is explained to them. It’s been eye-opening and has helped me develop communication skills to figure out what works best when talking to individuals from different backgrounds communities."

Q2: Why did you choose to pursue a career in healthcare?

"Healthcare has pulled together a lot of my interests as I’ve become more immersed in this community. I’ve always wanted to work with the public and the local community. Healthcare has so many different sectors, but most of them involve problem-solving and being there to support people when they’re at their lowest, both emotionally and physically. Being able to offer empathy and guidance to help someone through tough times has always been something I’ve wanted to do."

Q3: What advice would you give your first-year self?

"I would say not to be scared to try something new or put yourself out there. You don’t always need to be with your friends to join a new club or try a new sport. If you want to try something but no one else does, just go for it! I’ve met so many people that way, and joining clubs is a great way to explore university life. So, just do what you want, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone."
